As a professional photographer, I’ve tested a lot of gear over the years — and when it comes to nailing white balance, nothing has impressed me more than the ExpoDisc. At KLS Photography, we believe the ExpoDisc is the best tool out there for getting white balance right in-camera. It’s easy to use, incredibly consistent, and especially powerful for those of us who work in natural light — like I do with most of my portrait sessions.

Why I Love the ExpoDisc

✔️ Accurate Color, Every Time

With the ExpoDisc, the skin tones in my natural light portraits come out exactly how I see them. No weird color casts, no endless post-processing. Just clean, true-to-life tones that my clients love.

✔️ Fast and Foolproof

All it takes is one custom white balance photo at the start of your shoot — and you’re set. It’s truly a time-saver, especially when working outdoors where lighting conditions can change quickly.

✔️ Perfect for Natural Light Photography

Most of my work at KLS Photography happens outdoors or in naturally lit interiors. The ExpoDisc handles everything from golden hour to overcast skies with grace.

How to Use the ExpoDisc (Quick Tutorial)

Here’s exactly how I use it before a shot:

  1. Set your camera to Custom White Balance mode (you can check your camera manual for where to find this if you don’t know).
  2. Attach the ExpoDisc over your lens (or hold it firmly in place).
  3. Stand where your subject will be and point the camera toward your primary light source (usually the sky, window, or sun direction).
  4. Take a photo – this will be your white balance reference image.
  5. Set that image as your custom white balance in your camera.
  6. Shoot away — now all your images will be color balanced correctly for that lighting setup.

⚠️ Tip: If the lighting changes significantly (like moving from shade to sunlight), just repeat the steps. It takes less than 30 seconds.

Sample Photos from KLS

Golden Hour Outdoor Portrait

  • With ExpoDisc: Skin tones are rich and natural, and the background glow feels warm but not overly orange.
  • Without ExpoDisc: Slight orange cast makes skin look too saturated, requiring post-processing.

Photo 2: Overcast Day surrounded by green trees

  • With ExpoDisc: Soft, even color tone; greens are true and skin is neutral.
  • Without ExpoDisc: Skin has a subtle blue/green tint from reflected foliage and sky.

Photo 3: Midday Natural Light Portrait

  • With ExpoDisc: Despite the harsh overhead sun, skin tones stay balanced and accurate, with no blown-out highlights or strange color shifts.
  • Without ExpoDisc: Harsh shadows and color inconsistencies create uneven tones, especially in skin and white clothing, which can look too cool or washed out.

Final Thoughts

If you’re serious about getting your colors right in camera — especially for natural light portraits — the ExpoDisc is worth every penny. I use it for nearly every session at KLS Photography, and I can confidently say it’s one of the smartest tools in my camera bag.

Don’t wait to fix your colors in post. Get it right the first time, and let your images shine straight from the camera.
